Founded in the 12th century by Henry Beauclerc, Duke of Normandy, King of England and William the Conqueror's 4th son, Mortemer Abbey is now a historic and heritage site open to visitors. Nestled in a small peaceful valley, the monastery was severely destroyed during the 17th century; only the main house, the cloister's northern gallery, the farm buildings and the beautiful dovecote are still visible today. In the basement, an innovative display brings the history of the abbey back to life and brings up the legends and ghosts that are said to haunt the place...
Inside the abbey, you can see a water basin dating back to the 12th century. It is Saint Catherine's Fountain whose magical water is said to enable young women to find a husband within the year…
