Spared by the bombings during the Second World War, Verneuil d'Avre et d'Iton has lots of character. Its religious character is shown through St Madeleine's Church with its 56 metre-high Flamboyant Gothic tower and St Jean's and St Nicolas' Churches. The groups of Norman half-timbered houses and the elegant 18th century townhouses provide the town with even more charm. The Tour Grise is a medieval keep built by Philip II Augustus with "grison" stone, a red stone typical of the area. The moats of this former fortified town were filled with water diverted from the river Iton thanks to a man-made canal called “bras forcé”. Guided tours are organized upon request or on specified dates.
